Modern Ironstone Gratin Dish
Modern Ironstone Gratin Dish
For years I wanted to create my own gratin dishes but fell short of my goals. During the Covid quarantine, I took the time to take online ceramics tutorials and stumbled on several new methods for making molds. This form came from one of those classes.
Each gratin dish begins as a slab of clay draped over a mold and cut to fit. Each piece is finger scalloped at the edge as we press it into the mold. Finished with food safe glazes, each piece is meant for use in the oven, microwave, and at table, and is dishwasher safe. Persistent stains or cutlery marks come off with a little barkeeper’s friend or baking soda.
The large gratin dish measures 12x9.5x1.5”. The smaller dish, meant to nest for storage, is 10 x 8 x 1.5.
